Why Lighting Control Is the Unsung Hero of Home Automation
Plus, How We’re Using Smart Lighting Scenes for Fall & Winter
Nowadays, most Americans have some form of smart technology at home. In fact, 63 percent of U.S. households own at least one smart home device. The most popular solution is still the voice-controlled speaker, which was many people’s first foray into smart home technology. Runner-ups for most popular devices include smart TVs, smart thermostats, and smart plugs and outlets.
But in our humble opinion, one of the most life-changing upgrades you can make for your home is investing in smart lighting control. Our clients on Nantucket love being able to transform the mood with a touch of a button, adjusting the color and brightness across rooms in seconds.
Lighting Control Isn’t Just ‘Smart Bulbs’
If you’ve tried a smart bulb before, you may be wary of replacing all your lights with them. After all, won’t it be a lot of work to control the lights with an app? What if the Bluetooth or Wi-Fi isn’t working?
But those DIY smart bulbs are nothing like professionally-installed, whole-home control systems, which are typically hardwired or use radio frequency for reliable connectivity. With our installations, all light fixtures are integrated into the same control system, so you don’t need to switch between different apps and remotes. Even if your smart lights are from different brands, they still work via the same platform.
And it doesn't stop with smart bulbs. We also integrate motorized window shades, outdoor lighting, linear tape lights, and bespoke fixtures, all controlled through one smart system.
Control Beyond the App
The smart home apps we use offer incredible color-tuning and brightness possibilities. Slide your finger on the color wheel or brightness bar, and cultivate the exact mood you want.
But we understand—sometimes you want to unplug from your phone and control the lights the ‘regular way.’ For that, we install luxury wall keypads in brushed metal and matte finishes. Custom buttons can feature commands like “Morning” or “Night” that adjust your lights and shades to the perfect ambiance.
You may be thinking: what if I want to control just one light? But we promise, once you’ve experienced scene-based lighting control, you’ll never go back to turning on all the lights individually. And if you do want to? That’s still an option from the app or your smart home remote.
Lighting Control for All Seasons
One of our clients’ favorite things about smart lighting control is how it moves with the seasons. As we head into fall and winter, automated schedules can automatically activate your lights earlier in the day to account for Daylight Saving Time. Tunable lighting brings cozy warmth to the long, dark nights of New England winters. Lights appear bright and cool-white during the day, then gradually dim to warm, golden tones by evening. The next morning, they appear bright and sunny again, with no input required from you.
Outdoors, you can intelligently control smart LEDs to shine with festive colors for the holidays. Now getting into the holiday spirit is easier than ever; you no longer need to hang string lights every season. Just change the lights’ color from your smart home app!
